More than just a marathon Published Aug. 20, 2008 By Gen. Arthur Lichte Air Mobility Command commander SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Mobility Airmen, Airmen from around the world will join other runners in September at Wright-Patterson AFB for the 12th Annual Air Force Marathon - and Air Mobility Command can lead the way. The Air Force marathon has grown to national significance because it reflects our service so well: it's a first-class event and showcases the physical fitness, tenacity and warrior mindset of our Airmen. This year's marathon will be run Sept. 20 and is expected to attract at least twice the number of participants compared to previous years. The Air Force and all services are calling on their athletes to compete. In addition to the full marathon, several related events also are scheduled, including a half-marathon, and individual and team 10-kilometer runs. Also, a 5-kilometer race is slated for Sept. 19. Another feature of this year's marathon involves some friendly competition across the major commands. The Air Force will determine who is the "most dedicated" by tallying the percentage of people from each MAJCOM participating in the events. Commanders are able to authorize permissive TDY for active-duty competitors. Let's represent AMC well. Train well and safely - and support the Air Force marathon. If you haven't signed up already, go to www.usafmarathon.com and let's mobilize for this great event.
