Job Fair presents opportunities to servicemembers Published June 22, 2006 By 2nd Lt. Karoline Scott 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. 6/22/06 -- -- The Family Support Center at Scott Air Force Base is hosting their first major Job Fair since 2001 at the Scott Club from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday. "The idea for the fair originally came when the Force Shaping policy was announced last year," said Rose Hill, the FSC's Job Fair coordinator. "We wantedo offer opportunities to not only young officers who were preparing to leave the service, but to all Scott servicemembers, Department of Defense civilians, military spouses and retirees who are considering new careers." In order to make the Job Fair happen, the FSC needed support from local businesses. "A group of leaders from the 375th Airlift Wing spoke at the Saint Louis Regional Business Council's monthly meeting in May about the benefits of hiring military veterans," said Ms. Hill. "They also talked about the upcoming Job Fair and encouraged participation. "Following that meeting, we got immediate responses from several businesses interested in coming to Scott's Job Fair," she said. "It's a ‘win, win' situation. Many servicemembers are preparing to separate from the military and are seeking high caliber civilian jobs, and several businesses are looking to hire outstanding and quality individuals, which they will find at Scott AFB." The fair will host representatives from several local, national and international companies. "Presently, we are expecting approximately 70 different businesses," said Ms. Hill. "They are looking to hire individuals from a wide range of career fields and at all skill levels. We estimate they are seeking to fill at least 1,100 open positions. The possible economic impact of these jobs is more than $56 million." Some of the companies represented will include Lockheed Martin Corporation, Orion International, Microsoft, Centric Group, Premier Designs and many more. A complete list of job fair participants will be disseminated throughout base prior to Wednesday's fair. The FSC recommends that interested individuals prepare several copies of their resume to bring present to prospective employers. "We appreciate all that the military members, DoD civilians, servicemembers' spouses and retirees have done for this country," said Ms. Hill. "We know not everyone will stay in the military forever. With this fair, we hope to help military members find their second career. We encourage anyone who has access to Scott AFB to attend."
