10/24/2012 - SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The Air Mobility Command will hosts its annual singing competition, AMC Icon Oct. 25 and representing Scott AFB is 1st Lt. Nicole White, who works for AMC Public Affairs.
As the daughter of a retired master sergeant, she began singing at age 5 with her family as they sang in the church choir on Minot Air Force Base, N.D.
"Singing always allowed me to have an outlet no matter where we were stationed because there was always a chapel," said White. "My family inspired me to sing ... we use music to communicate, and it's what brings us together."
She is a fourth generation service member, and the only officer and female from her family to join. Her father retired in 2003 in Belleville, so it's another bonus to have her family nearby to watch her perform and cheer for her.
She said her favorite kind of music is R&B and that she'll be singing "Sweet Thing" by Chaka Khan for the finals. That was the song she performed to earn her first place at the base-level competition.
"I love to express myself through music," she said. "I was [so excited] when I found I won this year's competition. It's an honor to represent Team Scott at the AMC Icon finals."
White also sings the national anthem at various events on base when her schedule allows and enjoys singing karaoke in her spare time.
The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the performances start at 6:30 at the Scott Club. The performance is free, but seating will be limited. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase. For more information call the Scott Club at 744-1333.
