10/10/2012 - SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted the Individual Skills Special Olympics Tournament at the James Gym Sept. 25.

During the tournament eight members of Scott's Exceptional Family Member Program competed in Volleyball.

The athletes prepared for two months.

"All of the athletes were excited after preparing for the tournament," said Brenda Reed, 375th Force Support Squadron EFMP family support specialist.

The EFMP supports family members with physical, intellectual, or psychological conditions that require ongoing specialized medical or educational assistance.

"Participating in the Special Olympics Tournament allows our EFMP families at Scott the opportunity to be involved with their children," said Reed. "It also allows the children to be involved in the activities their peers are able to participate in."

Awards were given out to the athletes; with three gold, two silver, a bronze, fourth place ribbon and a participation ribbon given to the eight athletes who competed.

Reed said, "The athletes are working hard for upcoming Special Olympic events. We play hard and have fun doing it."

The Special Olympics team has participated in golf, softball and volleyball.

"We had six athletes advance to the Outdoor Sports Festival in Decatur, Ill., Sept. 8 for the state level competition," said Reed. "We brought home four gold medals, a silver medal and a fifth place ribbon."

The Scott EFMP's next Special Olympics event is basketball, which they are preparing for on Oct. 17. For more information contact the A&FRC at 256-8668.
