DEC. 8, 2012:
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds flight demonstration team is set to perform at Scott Air Force Base, Sept. 15-16, 2012, as part of Team Scott's 95th Anniversary Celebration.
Scott AFB is the nation's third oldest Air Force installation in the country--the U.S. War Department agreed to lease the land on June 14, 1917 and flying instruction officially began on Sept. 11, 1917. The year 2012 also marks the 65th Anniversary of the Air Force, it being established Sept. 18, 1947.
Col. Mike Hornitschek, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander, said he's glad to be able to host the Thunderbirds because "it means the public can come through our gates and see what their Air Force is doing and the technology we're using. They can meet the outstanding men and women who operation and maintain these valuable aircraft and trust that we're using our resources wisely and prudently."
The commander acknowledged that the flying portion of the two show days may be scaled back compared to the base's 2010 open house to meet fiscal constraints, but that he believes a happy medium can be achieved to be able to "showcase the amazing Thunderbirds demonstration team and showcase the great work we do every day at Scott AFB to execute our nation's military missions."
